Meet the Maker!

Get to know me a bit…

Hi all! My name is Johanna, and I am the human behind Triple Decker Candle Co. We are a small business so, with the help of my family, I am the founder, the photographer, the chandler (yes, that’s a word), the marketing manager, shipping and receiving, customer service, you name it! But, I love every single second of it! I’ve learned so much since starting this business, and I continue to perfect processes and products as we grow.

I live in Dorchester with my husband and dog. We live in a triple decker built in 1890. I’m constantly amazed at the engineering marvel that is this monstrous, old house. As we redo our home piece by piece I’m always amazed at what we find behind walls and under floors. The layers and layers of history are so interesting and exciting to me! Possibly more to write about this at a later time.

My favorite quote is by Friedrich Nietzsche “One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star”. This has always been my quote. I had art in my childhood bedroom with these words, and they will always live in my head. This quote speaks to me in so many different ways, but I most simply interpret it to mean you must live every day with a fire in your belly to accomplish a life you’re proud of. I am also a recovering ballerina so the dancing star concept will always be close to my heart.

I have always been fascinated with people and stories. My degrees are in journalism and public relations. I always find myself wanting to know more, asking deep questions, and always trying to figure out people’s “why”. My 9-5 career is frontward-facing in higher education; I have the privilege of hearing the stories of some of the most accomplished, and interesting people in the world. Call me crazy, but I forget my job is work. My desire to learn more about people makes me very extroverted. If you’ve met me I’ve probably talked your ear off, and I’m definitely going to do it again. I’m not apologizing, just warning!

I love, love, love getting to know our customers. I love when you send me photos of our products in your homes or on your heads. I love when you message me on social media. Please never hesitate to engage with me on instagram or over email!

My interests are candles (of course), teaching ballet and being on a board of a non-profit in Boston for affordable ballet education, working out, cooking and baking, reading, and learning. My family is the most important thing to me.

Things I don’t like:

  • Trying to pretend I know what I’m doing with social media

  • Being the center of attention (not a birthday person)

  • Winter after the holidays

  • Having my routine disrupted

  • Having my picture taken

Things I like:

  • Making other people feel valued

  • Baking cheesecake

  • Entertaining

  • Audiobooks

  • Excel

  • Traveling

I’m thankful for the opportunity to learn more about my Dorchester community through Triple Decker Candle Co. and I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for us.

Thank you for reading. Reach out any time!
