Why is there a huge pear statue in Dorchester?

Why is there a huge pear statue in Dorchester?? 🍐

In 1817 pears were first sold in the US by Dorchester resident Enoch Bartlett.

Later in the 1800s Bartletts pear was then cross bred with another by Thaddeus Clapp, also of Dorchester,
who named the species “Clapp’s Favorite”.

The 12 foot tall statue of Clapp’s Favorite by artist Laura Baring-Gould was built in Everett Square in 2007. The statue was built here because the land used to be the farm of the Clapp family!

The Dorchester Historical Society is selling some special edition “Clapp’s Favorite Pear” candles made with love by yours truly!

It was so much fun to learn more about this statue and make this delicious spiced pear scent. Get yours from the DHS online shop!
